Day 173 – zero day in Monson, Maine at 2074.6 (114.5 miles to go)

The longest breakfast and other miscellany.

I woke around 7 but lazed in bed until after 8am before dragging myself next door to Pete’s Place for breakfast, figuring I would have missed the rush by then. Seeing a full cafe of customers almost none of whom had food in front of them told me I had timed it very badly. Another hot and humid day made for a warm wait. Mainers rarely bother with AC as usually they only need for a short time each year. I chatted with Cricket (who seeks out every food eating challenge going), Dragon Head and Ninja. By the time my breakfast arrived it was more like brunch time.

After that I stopped by gas station to see what they had in the way if resupply and picked up some new earbuds as mine had given up the ghost a few days back. I decided against buying pig ears but it was good to have the option.

The Lakeshore House hostel is right on Lake Hebron. This is the view from the back terrace which is what I see from my room.

I walked over to the other hostel in town, Shaw’s, to check out their excellent gear and resupply shop. On the way over I passed this gentleman enjoying the Indian summer. He was still there 2 hours later.

Monson is a nice small town with some handsome buildings. This is a church learning and study centre.

I took my trekking poles over to Shaw’s so owner Poet could see if he could replace the broken tip on one despite not having Komperdell parts. He decided it was too risky to try. I went back to Pete’s for a milkshake and to get a sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch. I left my poles outside as you are supposed to but forgot them there, only to pick them up safely 3 hours later.

On the way back the afternoon sun was beginning to wane.

I tried fixing my pack’s torn side pocket with good old duct tape. We’ll see how that works out.

In the early evening, just before sunset I revisited Spring Creek BBQ for yet more pulled pork and snapped this pic.

  1. I wore out one set of Komperdell tips ar mile 1300 and couldn’t find replacements anywhere, so I called up Komperdell and they were super nice. They sent me brand new poles! Not sure why they didn’t just send me tips. A month later I broke off the tip like you did…this time they just sent me the replacement tip.
